Five Points

Gentrification.  Denver's highest priced neighborhood.  A legacy of jazz.  Any guesses?  Redline's executive director Louise Martorano visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe her arts organization's summer outreach to the Five Points community.

The view of Denver's historic Welton Street corridor these days is dominated by exploding development in the form of cranes.  One yet-to-be-developed plot is the parking lot at 29th and Welton.  Five Points Business District executive director Tracy Winchester joined "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to discuss plans for the location.

Five Points' celebrated brewery Spangalang (named for the classic jazz cymbal ride pattern) celebrates one year in business this weekend.  Co-founders Taylor Rees and Darren Boyd visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with stories and tastes.

Even though Rees, Boyd and Austin Wiley are experienced brewers, they're on feeling a bit giddy with the first year's success.  Their popular Belgian table beer "Sugarfoot" won a gold medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.  "I think we brewed that beer a whopping month and a half after we opened," said Rees.

Born and raised in Denver, Jesse DuBois has met most of jazz music's greatest names.  His father ran Colorado's Jim Crow-era resort for African Americans, Lincoln Hills - where the stars played.  Only later did DuBois pick up the brush.

A graduate of the Art Institute of Denver's first class in 1957, DuBois paints to this day.

This past winter's thaw broke a pipe in his Welton Street studio's basement.   Several works were damaged, some beyond repair.  (See the 9News story here.)
