Doors Open Denver: 10th year to take a close look

Doors Open Denver, in its 10th year, is billed as the annual celebration of Denver's built environment and design.  This year's event chairman Brit Probst visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with the details and some highlights.

"We've got a lot going on in Denver, with renovations and brand new buildings," said Probst, a Denver architect.  "We have great buildings in 12 different neighborhoods this year."  The event features walking tours and some expert guided tours, some of which require tickets.

Great Day in Harlem: Jean Bach's 1994 documentary

In August of 1958, 57 of the greatest jazz musicians of all-time gathered on the steps of a Harlem brownstone for a photograph.  The Academy Award-nominated 1994 documentary "A Great Day is Harlem" is a film about possibly the most famous photograph in jazz history.  It is also a love note to this art form. The musicians in the photo represented the full spectrum of jazz history from Dixieland to Big Band Swing, from Harlem Stride, to Modern Bebop. Sidemen, innovators, young lions, and old masters were all there.

Trials of Muhammad Ali: director Bill Siegel

The 2013 documentary "The Trials of Muhammad Ali" screened in Denver recently as part of the Community Cinema series, and it airs on "Independent Lens" on Rocky Mountain PBS (and other public TV stations) this Monday, April 14, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. (check local listing).  Director Bill Siegel talked about the film on "First Take with Lando and Chavis." 

  

The interview begins with a clip from the trailer.  The film covers Ali's conversion to the Nation of Islam, his opposition to the Vietnam War, and the price he paid for refusing his induction into the draft.

Don Grusin, friends: all-star jazz jam at Conf. on World Affairs

One of the annual offerings of the Conference on World Affairs is the jazz concert.  On Tuesday night, April 8, 2014, the players will crowd onto the stage at Macky Auditorium from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.  Don Grusin, Colorado native, CU graduate and professor, and jazz pianist visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with details of the concert and other CWA events.
