Denver's Tequila Library

Enjoy this radio tour of a relatively new establishment  over on Little Raven near the South Platte River, right next door to the popular eatery Zengo.  Our tour guide is  Jason Hayes, bar manager  at La Biblioteca de Tequila (the library of tequila).  General manager Kelly Berger also appears in this radio tour.

This reporter started pretty much at the beginning, knowing nothing (or not wanting to remember what he learned in college) about tequila.  An important fact: authentic tequila comes from the agave plant grown only  in the Jalisco region of Mexico.

The delightful suprise of Asian grocery shopping

It looked like cheese sticks, but it was dried fish tubes.  It looked like figs, but it was fish roe.  It looked like juice packets, but it was dishwashing soap.  Those and other surprises greeted Dave Perry, editor of Aurora Magazine.  He shared the joy of a recent trip to H Mart (the Asian grocery superstore at 2751 S. Parker Road).

Chicken wing controversies

  There are several debates about chicken wings: fried or baked, ranch sauce or blue cheese, and the ultimate question... are those little treats worth the work and messing fingers. Andrea West and Craig Oberlink from Fire on the Mountain in Denver's West Highlands neighborhood visited First Take live to tackle these pressing issues. Music on this feature by Mingus Big Band, "Eat that chicken (Paella)," from the CD Que Viva Mingus!

Lindita's capirotada (bread pudding)

  On our ongoing tour of ethnic holiday tables, we ran into Aurora Channel 8's TV chef Lindita Torres-Winters. She shared a holiday story, and her recipe for capirotadas (bread pudding). 

Chef Lindita is also known for her tamales (that come with a surprise inside!), and her salsa, which also comes in a dry mix. Her website:

 Lindita's recipe for Capirotadas (Mexican bread pudding) Into a few cups of water, add sticks of cinnamon and sugar and bring it to a boil until the water turns red.

Osage Cafe: Where Food Meets Community Vision

Nearly 100 students have graduated from the Denver Housing Authority's Youth Culinary Academy. A few of them get to sharpen their skills at the school's working restaurant, Osage Cafe (1099 Osage), in the Mariposa District. "Culinary Arts with a Mission," says the website. It claims to be Denver's "first community-based culinary training center." Osage Cafe also offers community classes on healthy, affordable cooking.
