Dazzle at Baur's

Three days before this past Sunday’s Grammy® Awards were handed out, pianist Billy Childs was in town with his strong quartet. During his two sets at Dazzle, the pianist played a number of tunes from his latest album, Rebirth. On Grammy® night, Childs’ Rebirth walked away with the award for best jazz instrumental album. That was just one more reminder, if any more were really needed, as to vitality of the city’s live jazz scene.

Among Metro Denver’s pre-eminent jazz families is certainly the Fuller Family of Aurora, Colo.  The patriarch, bassist Fred Fuller and noted saxophonist, daughter Tia Fuller visited KUVO on the occasion of the family band getting back together for Papa Fuller’s 70th birthday.

Back in 1989, I was in Denver for a job interview. It was my first visit to the Centennial State and I did what I do whenever I am in a new city – check to see if there is any jazz around. One of the items I came across was a listing saying that Joe Bonner was playing piano at the bar in the Wynkoop Brewpub. Like any jazz fan, I knew who Bonner was. Could this be the same player who worked with tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and who was on the very first release from the famed label Black Saint (Black Saint by tenor saxophonist Billy Harper in 1975)?

October is just around the corner and it kicks off in style with visits from bassist/singer Katie Thiroux and pianist Danilo Pérez plus a 97th birthday celebration for bassist Charles Burrell.

If you check out clarinet category in the 65th annual Downbeat “Critics Poll” published this past month, you will find that the top five names listed are Anat Cohen, Paquito D’Rivera, Ken Peplowski, Don Byron and Ben Goldberg. Goldberg is a Denver native, while Byron resettled here a couple of years ago to teach in the Jazz and American Improvised Music program at Metropolitan State University of Denver. And during this musical week, Peplowski visits town for a performance on Wednesday at Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club, 1330 27th in the RiNo district.
