Directed by Paul McKee, CU's award winning big band will perform this amazing jazz interpretation of Tchaikovsky's famous score for "The Nutcracker."

The CU Jazz Ensemble has been recognized as one of the nation's outstanding big bands. Graduates of the program have gone on to successful careers as educators and performers. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music each year, ranging from swing era music to the contemporary sounds of the Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider.

In the 2014 DownBeat “Critics Poll,” singer Cécile McLorin Salvant exploded on the jazz scene. Just a year or so after the release of her first American album, WomanChild on Mack Avenue, the Miami-born singer, who moved to Aix-en-Provence, France in 2007 to study at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud, emerged not only as the rising-star female vocalist but also as the top overall female vocalist on the scene (and the rising-star jazz artist as well).

The most interesting musical visitor to town this week is saxophonist Greg Osby who will be at Nocturne on Thursday. Born in St. Louis in 1960, Osby came to New York after a stint at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. He worked with a range of top-shelf players such as Woody Shaw and Ron Carter and connected with fellow saxophonist Steve Coleman and the musical banner labeled M-Base that injected a rap-hop element into the jazz sound and initially covered folk like singer Cassandra Wilson.

It’s been 50 years since the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, the group’s eighth studio recording. On Thursday, the San Francisco (SF) String Trio takes the music from the album out for an intriguing jazz spin at Dazzle, 1512 Curtis.
