From 2012 to 2016, five artists from Denver or players who have a close connection to the city rose to the top spot in seven of the categories found in DownBeat magazine’s annual “Critic’s Poll.” The musicians are: alto saxophonist/soprano saxophonist/flautist Tia Fuller (who earned the top spot for all three instruments); drummer Rudy Royston; trumpeter Kirk Knuffke (who actually plays cornet); singer René Marie; and Hammond B-3 man Pat Bianchi.

They have performed at the best venues in Denver, and drawn large and enthusiastic audiences. Clare brings her passion and artistry leading the quartet in many different styles for the audience to enjoy.

Denver saxophonist Clare Church has been playing professionally for 30 years. Her first gig was with Tony Bennett, and since that memorable night, she has worked with the bands of Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Nancy Wilson, Mel Torme, and George Shearing, among others, as well as being a regular with the Colorado Symphony and the Boulder Philharmonic. She is also a member of Art Lande’s inimitable Boy/Girl Band, the Lewis/Church Quintet, the Colorado Sax Quartet, the Baker/Mulligan Tribute Band, and is co-leader of the modern jazz group, Polarity.
