SWR Music

August is a special month for KUVO Jazz as every August 29 we celebrate another anniversary, this year we will toast to our 32nd year of providing jazz to Denver, the Front Range and beyond. In honor of this special occasion, we have selected a superb recording as our monthly spotlight. It’s the swinging SWR Big Band from Stuggart, Germany that has amazed audiences since its founding in 1951. Over the decades, the SWR has collaborated with some of the finest names in jazz, Miles Davis, Frank Foster, Chick Corea, Arturo Sandoval, Roy Hargrove and dozens more.

Bobby Watson is one of the most accomplished saxophonists and educators of the last 40 years, rightfully so, because Bobby was born and raised in one of the most fertile and important areas for jazz in the US, Kansas City. After graduating from the University of Miami in 1975, attending at the same time as Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorious, he relocated to NY and rapidly became the music director of the prestigious Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, a position he held until 1981 when he left to form his own band, Horizon.

University of Northern Colorado-Greely

Colorado’s Front Range, from Fort Collins to Colorado Spring is fortunate to have an abundance of marvelous jazz musicians and an amazing array of jazz education programs with highly qualified instructors. One of the brightest spots on the map is the University of Northern Colorado at Greely which boasts an excellent faculty and talented students. Their annual jazz festival brings some of the most prestigious names of jazz to conduct workshops and play alongside the students and faculty musicians.

The virtuoso violinist Regina Carter grew up in Detroit, her mom was an ardent Ella Fitzgerald fan and played her records throughout Regina’s childhood and teenage years. The influence of Ella on Ms. Carter is still with her, in fact, when learning a new standard or song, she always goes back to the Ella Fitzgerald version of the tune to perfect her playing of it.
