The virtuoso violinist Regina Carter grew up in Detroit, her mom was an ardent Ella Fitzgerald fan and played her records throughout Regina’s childhood and teenage years. The influence of Ella on Ms. Carter is still with her, in fact, when learning a new standard or song, she always goes back to the Ella Fitzgerald version of the tune to perfect her playing of it.

Of the amazing crop of gifted pianists around the world, surely Christian Sands is on the top portion of that list. Not yet 30 years of age, Christian has accomplished many of his goals and has been honored with many accolades for his playing and compositional skills by his peers and mentors.

The multi-instrumentalist and educator Michael Dease hails from Augusta, GA which is known for giving the world James Brown. Although best known as a tenor and bass trombonist, Dease also plays, trumpet, piano, saxophone and bass.  he is currently the Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone at Michigan State University, he previously held similar positions at Queens College, CUNY, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.

We close out the year with previously unreleased concert recordings of two former KUVO artists of the year, from 2014 legendary pianist-composer-bandleader Horace Silver and from 2016, “the world’s greatest living saxophonist” Sonny Rollins. In 1959, both the Sonny Rollins Trio and the Horace Silver Quintet played in the Radio Studio Zurich on March 5th, 1959 for a live broadcast and recording. Finally, over 55 years later TCB the Montreux Jazz Label which issue concerts from Swiss Radio broadcasts and Montreux Jazz Festival performances has remastered and released their shows.
