First Take with Lando and Chavis

Weekdays, 6 a.m. to 9 A.M.

Start your day off right with Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis, bringing you a blend of music, news and community programming every weekday morning from 6 to 9 AM.

Each week, Lando's Stories of Standards feature examines a different jazz standard or tune from the Great American Songbook to educate listeners on the song's history, composers and covers.

On Wednesdays, Chavis hosts Eats & Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic.

Tune in Thursdays for Arts & Culture features. Every month on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, we explore the world of Jazz on Film with special guest Matthew Goldwasser. On the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, KUVO arts maven and Rocky Mountain PBS Arts District host Carrie Saldo presents the latest in Colorado's visual and performing arts.

Dr. Greer's Book Review: Left of Boom

Jun 13, 2017

Sometimes a singular event can change the trajectory of one's life, so it was with Douglas Laux who was a college freshman when the twin towers fell in New York. After graduating college, Laux joined the CIA with one central goal: getting to Afghanistan and becoming involved in covert action.  Douglas Laux's and Ralph Pezzullo's latest book "Left of Boom: How a Young CIA Case Officer Penetrated the Taliban and Al-Qaeda" describes Laux's painstakingly hard work to identify clandestine operations overseas.

Twenty years ago today, the bloom was on full in lower downtown Denver.  Maybe that was even before they called it "LoDo."  Brothers Chris and Steve Black dared to open a tap house a half-block from Coors Field.  And despite its ominous moniker, the Falling Rock Tap House is still standing at 1919 Blake Street.  Chris Black joined Steve and Rodney on "First Take with Lando and Chavis."

Our guest chef for the May 2017 edition of KUVO's Wine and Food Pairing is the new chef at Dazzle at Baur's Mario Godoy.  He'll be serving a fresh take on a traditional recipe from his native Jalisco, Mexico.  And sommelier Carolyn Joy has just the match.

Godoy's dish is called "Carnes En Su Jugo."  He'll be serving it at KUVO Night, a benefit for the community jazz radio station on Thursday, May 25 at the new downtown Denver home of Dazzle Jazz, 1512 Curtis St.

Gentrification.  Denver's highest priced neighborhood.  A legacy of jazz.  Any guesses?  Redline's executive director Louise Martorano visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe her arts organization's summer outreach to the Five Points community.

The Colorado Rockies are building momentum, so there are even more reasons to visit 20th and Blake this season.  Denver.Eater.com's Gigi Sukin wrote up the literal smorgasbord and visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to talk about it.
