This week the Vinyl Vault brings the funk with a 1977 album from keyboardist Patrice Rushen, “Shout It Out.” This was the last album she recorded for the Prestige label before signing with Elektra, a label that glammed her up, changed her sound and resulted in a whole lot more record sales. Unfortunately, it also moved her sound far from the jazz world. On “Shout It Out,” Rushen gets funky in a jazzy and soulful way and the arrangements leave plenty of space for her excellent keyboard work.
