Five Points’ celebrated brewery Spangalang (named for the classic jazz cymbal ride pattern) celebrates one year in business this weekend.  Co-founders Taylor Rees and Darren Boyd visited “First Take with Lando and Chavis” with stories and tastes.

Even though Rees, Boyd and Austin Wiley are experienced brewers, they’re on feeling a bit giddy with the first year’s success.  Their popular Belgian table beer “Sugarfoot” won a gold medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival.  ”I think we brewed that beer a whopping month and a half after we opened,” said Rees.

The beer hall’s relaxing interior has recently been adorned with new artwork by local muralist Paul Vismara, who created mural and three faux album covers inspired by classic jazz LPs and Colorado wildlife: a mountain lion at the organ, a sax-playing ram, a bear at the drum kit.  ”We wanted to maintain the jazz theme, and we thought the animals would be a fun way to play with that, showing the diversity of the types of beers that we’re going to be making,” said Boyd.

Carlos and Steve tasted their kettle-soured brew “Volume 2” (in the wild beer tradition), and the imperial stout “Night Walker.”  In the audio below, here Carlos and the brewers talk about the power of collaboration in Colorado’s craft beer movement.
