Paul Mullikin | KUVO 30 Under 30

Sep 8, 2015

Composer, educator, and multi-instrumentalist Paul Mullikin has been playing music since he was 10 years old.

Growing up with professional musician parents, Paul took to music naturally and began playing drums in his elementary school band.

Paul attended the Denver School of the Arts and Denver University Lamont School of Music, where he was awarded a Downbeat Magazine award.

In addition to drums and percussion, Paul plays piano and guitar as well as raps and sings.

"I love to play jazz, I love to play classical, I used to do a lot more hip hop," said Paul. "As a result of that [musical diversity], at least I hope, my playing is supportive and empathetic and I'm adaptable."

"I'm much more interested in being sincere and authentic with what I'm doing and hopefully connecting with people rather than coming across as technically awesome."

Paul appreciates music's ability to bring people together.

"[Music's] there for everybody, whatever they're going through," Paul said. "It has that power to connect to people and even help us through things."

To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30. These features will be released on-air and online June 29-October 31.
