Free meals and summer fun for CO kids
"Children are at the greatest risk for hunger because they're losing access to school meals, and families are having to stretch their food budget father, so it can be challenging," said Ray. The program expects to serve 1.34 million meals this summer.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Colorado Department of Education, Hunger Free Colorado and "a ton of other partners who actually provide the food," the free summer feeding program is remarkably hassle-free, with no ID or income requirements, and it's open to youth up through age 18. Beyond the sports drink and a bag of chips, the program provides meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines. Depending on the location, breakfast, lunch or dinner is served daily through the summer months. More than 500 distribution sites across Colorado can be found on line at www.KidsfoodFinder.org, or by calling the statewide, multilingual Hunger Free Hotline at (855) 855-4626. Music on this feature is by The Gene Harris Quartet, "Strollin'," from the CD Like a Lover, and Larry Goldings, "(I'm Your) Jellyman," from the CD Big Stuff.
