Denver Celebrates Kwanzaa!

interview with Thedora Jackson
December 26 marks the first day of Kwanzaa, which began in the mid 1960s. The seven day holiday has been celebrated for decades in Denver. Local organizer Thedora Jackson visited First Take's Mary MacCarthy with the details.

Highlighting a different principle each day until New Years, The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa (the "Nguzo Saba") are: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith.

The Kwanzaa Committee of Denver can be reached through their Facebook page.

(Music on this feature is "Overture: A Partial History of Black Music," produced by Mervyn Warren on the CD Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration.)
