The daughter of a pastor, Cat Ackermann learned to play piano and sing at church at an early age. She soon mastered her craft and led youth and adult worship teams.

In seventh grade, Cat joined her school’s band and fell in love with jazz.

“I feel like it’s a daily obligation to do something creative, whether it be just listening to music on the radio or practicing or teaching,” Cat said.

An experienced vocal and piano instructor, Cat thrives on helping musicians grow and find their own personal voices through music.

“In every lesson that I teach, I end up bringing it back to jazz technique or jazz language,” Cat said. “I believe that once you can play jazz, you can play anything.”

An alumna of the University of Denver, Cat studied under Eric Gunnison.

“The Denver jazz scene is amazing, I’m so glad it’s here,” Cat said. “Our scene is very encouraging.”

To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30. These features will be released on-air and online June 29-October 31.
