Bobby Watson and Horizon

Feb 24, 2014

On Thursday, February 27th, alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson and Horizon will return to the Mount Vernon stage.  This All-Star band first performed at Mount Vernon in 1988 and again in 1999.  This year, the group is embarking on their 30th Anniversary Tour.   In 1983, having recently ended a four year stint as musical director with the late great Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers, Watson conceived of his own small group that would advance his musical ideas in a more modern, hard hitting, post-bop sound. Drummer Victor Lewis, who had made a name for himself working with the likes of Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw and Stan Getz partnered with Bobby in creating the band.  Within a few years, the band settled into its current line up including pianist Edward Simon, bassist, Essiet Okon Essiet and back then, a very young trumpeter, Terrel Stafford.  Truly an all-star group, each musician contributes to the compositions and brings their individual experience to the unique sound of Horizon.
