August 2013 CD of the Month

Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts  Hang Time  Tapestry/Capri Records

Both groups are piano-less, Group Giz, an octet, features 2 trumpets and a trombone, while Group Gunn, a septet, has 1 trumpet and vibraphones.  Both have bass-drums-guitar-alto and tenor sax..Paul and Chris Romaine founded the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts in 1999. Their first session had 6 students meeting weekly: ending in a single performance. Since then, CCJA has grown: now operating in 3 metro Denver locations and averaging 9 youth bands each session. Nearly 800 teens have participated!

The current curriculum includes two summer camps, a new youth JazzFest, Outreach Programs to schools, expanded public performances, guided public youth jam sessions, a peer mentoring program, and a recording and music industry program.

The new SSJA recording, Hang Time for Colorado’s own, Tapestry/Capri Records is KUVO/KVJ's CD of the Month for August, 2013.  All of the student musicians involved in this project received outstanding instruction from the CCJA: mprovisation, composition, music publishing and the business side of the industry. There are 14 tracks on Hang Time, seven by each ensemble, all original songs written by various members of the ensembles urged to express their individuality. Both groups are piano less, Group Giz, an octet, features 2 trumpets and a trombone while Group Gunn, a septet, has 1 trumpet and vibraphones.  Both have bass-drums-guitar-alto and tenor sax.

The great artwork of this CD is worthy of mentioning, the front cover has a clothes line with instruments hanging from it while the back cover has furniture on its clothes pins. The depictions are a fine representation of the hang time the musicians spent while honing their skills at CCJA.
