30 Years of Mainstream Jazz in One Box

May 1, 2014

For your membership to KUVO/KVJZ at $20 a month, we'd love to send you this 6-CD boxed set: Concord Records 30th Anniversary, plus a new jazz89 hoodie or long sleeved T-shirt featuring a divine Sarah Vaughan graphic.

Concord Records was founded by California mainstream Jazz aficionado Carl Jefferson with a mission to provide exposure and opportunity for his favorite veteran artists neglected by the Jazz-Pop and Fusion era.  It wasn't long before Concord Jazz became major forces by presenting consistently swinging music by many of the top artists of the 1980's: Gene Harris, Phil Woods, Emily Remler, and Ray Brown all recorded some of their finest work on the label.  Guitarists merit special attention in this collection, with dozens of outstanding performances from Barney Kessell, Herb Ellis, Kenny Burrell, Tal Farlow, Jim Hall and several other greats.  Big bands are represented by the stomping orchestras of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, and Louis Bellson, plus the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut to name but a few.  Artists from the forward-looking, Chick Corea - produced Stretch subsidiary dominate disc 3 of the collection with tracks from bassist Avishai Cohen, vibist Gary Burton and Mr. Corea himself.  Vocalists included in this set include Mel Torme, Susannah McCorkle, Rosemary Clooney  and Karrin Allyson, while the final disc on Concord Records' 30th Anniversary collection spices things up with artists from the Latin Jazz imprint Concord Picante with many the hottest bandleaders of all time: Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Poncho Sanchez, and Tito Puente!
