Vail Jazz Festival Kick-off

This week on the Vinyl Vault, it’s a 1976 album from drummer Chico Hamilton simply entitled “Chico Hamilton and the Players.” Indeed, this Blue Note album features some great players including Black Arthur Blythe on alto and soprano saxophones, Steve Turre on electric bass and bass trombone, percussionist Abdullah, Will Connell, Jr. on alto sax and a 19-year-old Rodney Jones on guitar. Turre, Jones and Blythe, of course, went on to successful solo careers. This album showcases their talents from a time before they became leaders.

Local Vocalist Spotlight: Teresa Carroll

Another one of Denver Jazz’ pride and joys is Teresa Carroll, singer.  Teresa was trained in voice at Ithaca College, at the Harlem School of the Arts, and with vocal coaches in New York.  Known primarily as a jazz singer, she has sung opera for four years at Mike Bernardi’s, winning many accolades, including Best Opera Singer for Westword’s “Best Of” edition.  Westword also awarded her “Best Jazz Singer.”  Now, that’s a range!

The Greeley Blues Jam offers  a family oriented atmosphere where everyone can expect a wonderful Blues experience. Great food and drink, merchandise vendors, ample free parking, plus camping & RV sites available just outside the Island Grove Arena.

Expect lots of food vendors on site or pack a picnic lunch, leave it in your car, and you can come and go from the arena and enjoy the park. Ticket holders will be stamped and allowed to re-enter at any time. Don’t forget to bring your picture I.D.

This week it’s Brazilian-born pianist/singer Eliane Elias who kicks off our musical calendar with the final sets of her two-night stand at Dazzle, 930 Lincoln, at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. Her latest CD is titled Dance of Time and, at Dazzle, she has a trio with Marc Johnson on bass and Rafael Barata on drums (303-839-5100).

Our guest chef for the May 2017 edition of KUVO's Wine and Food Pairing is the new chef at Dazzle at Baur's Mario Godoy.  He'll be serving a fresh take on a traditional recipe from his native Jalisco, Mexico.  And sommelier Carolyn Joy has just the match.

Godoy's dish is called "Carnes En Su Jugo."  He'll be serving it at KUVO Night, a benefit for the community jazz radio station on Thursday, May 25 at the new downtown Denver home of Dazzle Jazz, 1512 Curtis St.
