Vinyl Vault: The Dixie Dregs

Apr 7, 2018

The Dixie Dregs are back together and touring again. The band’s heyday was in the late 70s and early 80s when they honed a unique jazz-rock sound with a little bit of country and classical and a dose of humor thrown in. The band was known for its pyrotechnic live shows and virtuosic musicianship. The current tour, with the original line-up lands in Boulder this weekend for shows this Friday and Saturday nights. And, because the Vinyl Vault sports several Dixie Dregs albums, we’ll hear from some of them this Tuesday.

Apr 7, 2018

KUVO appreciates and celebrates jazz every day.  But since the Smithsonian Institution designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), we’re happy to make this month an occasion to raise the flag a little higher and shine a little extra light on the jazz art form.

Eddie Harris Tribute | Thursdays

Apr 6, 2018

A quartet of Denver's jazz elite ( saxophonist Keith Oxman, guitarist Dave Corbus, bassist Ken Walker and drummer Todd Reid ) will be exploring Eddie Harris' legacy and musical ideas through their own lens Thursday nights through March & April.  An influential force on the jazz world for decades, tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris used his light and fluid sound to bring groundbreaking compositions such as “Listen Here”, “Freedom Jazz Dance”, and “Cold Duck Time" to the world.

Whether you are in Paris, St. Petersburg (the 2018 host city of International Jazz Day), Sydney (the 2019 host city for International Jazz Day) or Denver, April is the month to appreciate America’s great cultural contribution to the world. This past week, at the start of the month, you could have done just that here from listening to the 16-year old pianist/Hammond B-3 player Matthew Ridgeway to tuning your ears to the classic sound of 89-year old tenor saxophonist/composer Benny Golson.

Tijuana Taxi Confessions | Apr 12

Apr 5, 2018

At one time in Southern California, Mexican taxis were a common sight as they were free to cross the border taking customers both to and from Mexico. Like other youth of their time pachucos appreciated owning their own car. Just as the taxi owners strove to customize theirs to set it apart from all of the other taxis, so did the pachucos modify theirs to project their unique style.

Contributing artist of Pachucos y Sirenas, Alfredo Cardenas, will takes us on a tour of his artist made Tijuana Taxi.

War profiteering is as old as war itself. Those who make their money from armed conflict are sure to arrange it and support it at every opportunity; in fact, the U.S. has been at war for 225 of its 242 years.
