Current Numbers Aren’t Promising, but ‘LatinasRepresent’ See Opportunity

When politicians, advocates and interested citizens gathered in Denver earlier this month to roll out a new organization called LatinasRepresent - which will seek to boost the number of Hispanic women holding public office - they were confronted by some bleak numbers:  --No Latina has ever served in the U.S.

Ed Sullivan never stopped writing his column for the N.Y. Daily News, but his transition to "showman" treated the nation to an unmatched cultural panoply.  On "First Take with Lando and Chavis," Sullivan's press agent (1963 - 1971) Bernie Ilson tells the story behind Sullivan's genius in the book Sundays with Sullivan - How the Ed Sullivan Show brought Elvis, The Beatles and Culture to America, now in paperback.

   

Poinciana - a Cuban folk song

On "Stories of Standards" this week,  the Cuban folk song, written in the 1930s, that Ahmad Jamal made a hit in the 1960s, "Poinciana."  Given to a wide variety of interpretations, we'll spring some surprising versions on you this week.  And thanks to a few listeners, a vocal version or two.  It's our daily jazz education feature on "First Take with Lando and Chavis", weekdays from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m.

The future of Denver's Welton Street Corridor is beginning to take shape with the winners of the Welton Design/Development Challenge announced last week.  Grants from $50,000 to $150,000 to five development plans hope to spark a major facelift and revival to one of the city's historic neighborhoods. The audio feature includes remarks from the deputy regional administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Daniel Gomez, Jr.

Mardi Gras is just around the corner which means it's time for the annual R&B Jukebox New Orleans/Mardi Gras Show!

Every year on the Saturday before Fat Tuesday, the R&B Jukebox celebrates the incredible, danceable, poly-ryhthmic, good-time music that personifies the people, food, and culture that is unique to New Orleans.

Artists include Fats Domino, The Spiders, Allen Toussaint, Professor Longhair, Huey "Piano" Smith, Earl King, Paul Gayten, and Lee Allen, just to name a few.

Cleo Parker Robinson takes to the stage herself this weekend (and next) in her company's 4th annual winter production "Cleo on Cleo."  Seasoned members of the company will dance newly choreographed pieces, and the youngest dancers will re-interpret her repertory works.

"I'll be dancing 'Motherless Child' with (singers) Arthur Jones and LaTanya Hutchins from the Spirituals Project ," exclaimed Denver's world famous dance diva.  "There are a lot of men dancing too, and I love that."  A new piece will honor Nelson Mandela, including music from John Coltrane and Art Blakey.

City Park Jazz

The City Park Jazz Festival, in its 28th year, is looking for a T-shirt design for 2014.  Dave Flomberg from the City Park Jazz board of directors visited First Take with the details of the Facebook contest (LINK to Facebook page).

According to Flomberg, the free Sunday evening concerts at the City Park Lake pavilion begin on June 1 with Hazel Miller, and the 10-week series closes with be Chris Daniels and the Kings on August 3rd.

DAM "Untitled:" Choose Your Own Adventure

The Denver Art Museum kicked off its 2014 season of of Final Friday events in January with the ambiguous theme “au natural.”

The museum’s after-hours semi-monthly events, labeled “Untitled,” give patrons an opportunity to explore the museum at night. The turn of every corner yielding anything from a hidden masterpiece, to random musicians armed with glockenspiels and maracas. 

According to Jaime Kopke, manager of adult and college programs, “Untitled” provides various opportunities for expression in an environment dedicated to celebrating expressive works.

Nina Simone, born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, would be marking her 84th birthday today. She was born on this date in 1933 in Tyron, NC and passed in 2003, while living in France. Nine Simone was a force of nature. She had strongly-held beliefs and lived her life in support of them. Her passions included music - of course -, but also racism and the civil rights movement, and  government intrusion, which led to her leaving the US and residing in Barbados, Liberia, Switzerland Netherlands and finally, France.
