Guitarist Peter Bernstein kicks off the week in music on Thursday when he hits town to hook up with the Convergence sextet at Dazzle, 930 Lincoln, at 7 and 9 p.m. Born in New York, Bernstein found a potent mentor in the great Jim Hall. Before long, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson added Bernstein to his group; and, over the years, the fluent guitarist, who was born in 1967, worked with a host of strong players, while producing a string of discs under his own name.

David Amram Returns to Denver

KUVO welcomes David Amram back to Denver. The multi-instrumentalist  will be in the on-air studio Friday, Feb. 7 at 4pm for an interview with Erik Troe. Amram performs with his Denver based quartet at the 5th Annual Neal Cassady Birthday Bash at the Mercury Cafe on Friday at 8pm. Also performing will be Janine Santana, and Richie Cole. Amram's forthcoming CD is titled, This Land, Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie; conducted with the Colorado Symphony in this live recording from 2012

They recreate the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Bix Beiderbecke, Wilbur DeParis, Turk Murphy and many additional artists.

 Let’s get right to the most important fact: Dianne Reeves is the greatest living jazz singer. And she gives the dead ones a run for their money too. Pick any aspect: phrasing, intonation, soul, emotion, interpretation, range, control, improvisation. She has it all. And she knows how to use it. Those last three on the list, in particular, conspire to create remarkable and breathtaking jumps of an octave or more during her improvisational scat solos. That’s just one example of why Reeves is such a pleasure to hear.
