Telluride Jazz Festival

It’s that time of year when festivals are in full bloom. Just this week, for example, there are two jazz festivals on the schedule, both of which run Friday through Sunday. The first is the long running jazz celebration in Telluride whose guest of honor this year is saxophonist Ernie Watts. In addition to the multi-faceted Watts and his quartet, there are strong jazz sounds from guitarist Bill Frisell and his trio and Hammond B-3 master Joey DeFrancesco.

Every month, Carolyn Joy of Joy Wine & Spirits shares a divine wine and food pairing with our listeners.

For a delicious wine pairing for summer grilling - spicy charred steaks, grilled portobello mushrooms, blackened tuna, Cajun spices or hard cheddar cheese - try a slightly cooled glass of Southern Right Pinotage.

If you've ever been on the fence about liking Pinotage or even South African red wine, the 2013 Southern Right Pinotage just might push you to become a fan.

Willis Conover was known around the world, but not so much at home. He was the voice of jazz over the Voice of America for more than 40 years, most of it during the Cold War.

Imagine what it was like to sit in the dark of a hushed room in Prague, Moscow or Warsaw in the 1960s, fiddle with the dial of a shortwave radio, slide over crackles, pops, and jamming, to finally find the opening notes of "The A Train" and a rich baritone intoning slowly through the static, "Good evening. Willis Conover with Music USA ... "

Her 2013 debut album caused quite a stir among jazz fans, reviewers and musicians,  Cécile McLorin Salvant returns with For One To Love, another solid recording showing off the variety of styles within Cécile's vocal prowess. San Francisco Bay Area pianist Jim Martinez grew up a fan of Vince Guaraldi's piano and of Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters, after visiting the Schulz Museum of nearby Santa Rosa, he opted to record Good Grief!: A Tribute to Guaraldi, Schulz and Peanuts.
