While the large-scale Jazz at the Vineyards event celebrating KUVO’s 30 years on the air is over, the birthday party continues. At the Blair-Caldwell Library, 2401 Welton, for example, an exhibit marking KUVO’s three decades of bringing jazz to the community is on display through September 9. Also at the Blair-Caldwell Library, KUVO’s jazz film series is back on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. a free event. The feature this time around is Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense.

On Saturday, you can head to Niwot and catch the 5th edition of Jazz on 2nd Avenue that runs from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. As in the past, the free, in-town event blends area-based artists with special guest performers for a well-produced day and night of music. The Colorado Jazz Group Lions kick things off, followed by trumpeter Brad Goode’s Polytonal Dance Party and the Quemando Salsa Band. At 3:30 p.m.

One of saxophonist Kenny Garrett’s the most captivating tunes is Sing a Song of Song found on his 1997 disc Songbook. And this is going to be a great week for singing a song of song as vocalists Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall and Kevin Mahogany are all on stage over the next seven days.

Telluride Jazz Festival

It’s that time of year when festivals are in full bloom. Just this week, for example, there are two jazz festivals on the schedule, both of which run Friday through Sunday. The first is the long running jazz celebration in Telluride whose guest of honor this year is saxophonist Ernie Watts. In addition to the multi-faceted Watts and his quartet, there are strong jazz sounds from guitarist Bill Frisell and his trio and Hammond B-3 master Joey DeFrancesco.
