The Morning Beat features a "romantic spotlight" tune twice every morning, and also hosts a variety of book and cultural reviews.

By now, most jazz fans in these parts know that clarinetist and composer Don Byron moved to Denver from New York this fall to join the music faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver. A featured artist in The International Piano Experience, internationally renowned pianist Lisa Downing will perform on September 4 at the Soiled Dove Underground

An award-winning international concert pianist, Downing is re-defining the genre of solo piano.

 Critics have said: “Lisa’s playing touches all your emotions, providing them with a startling mastery of her own beautiful and heartfelt voice.”

While the large-scale Jazz at the Vineyards event celebrating KUVO’s 30 years on the air is over, the birthday party continues. At the Blair-Caldwell Library, 2401 Welton, for example, an exhibit marking KUVO’s three decades of bringing jazz to the community is on display through September 9. Also at the Blair-Caldwell Library, KUVO’s jazz film series is back on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. a free event. The feature this time around is Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense.

On Saturday, you can head to Niwot and catch the 5th edition of Jazz on 2nd Avenue that runs from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. As in the past, the free, in-town event blends area-based artists with special guest performers for a well-produced day and night of music. The Colorado Jazz Group Lions kick things off, followed by trumpeter Brad Goode’s Polytonal Dance Party and the Quemando Salsa Band. At 3:30 p.m.



One of saxophonist Kenny Garrett’s the most captivating tunes is Sing a Song of Song found on his 1997 disc Songbook. And this is going to be a great week for singing a song of song as vocalists Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall and Kevin Mahogany are all on stage over the next seven days.
