Claflin University Choir in Denver

Down in the roots of jazz, you'll probably find the blues.  In the soil around those roots, you're sure enough going to find the spirituals.  Singing those songs of the ancestors is the Concert Choir of Claflin University, the first historically black college in South Carolina.  The choir director and chair of the music department at Claflin University, Dr. Isaiah McGee visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis."

Review: Best American Essays 2013

The Best American Essays, edited by Cheryl Strayed, is an anthology worth reading if you enjoy the strictly personal narrative.  And, although the essays in the collection offer a wide breadth of writing approaches, there's a sameness to them that makes the 2013 collection less than rewarding.

The collection has a round up the usual suspects feel to it, as the essayists deal with the all-too-familiar and the all-too-ordinary.

Jazz, Wine & Walking Tour of Five Points

The jazz greats played here, ate here, relaxed here.  Jack Kerouac wrote about the area.  Now, the formal name of this neighborhood is the Five Points Historic Cultural District.  That's bureaucratic language for the area once known as "Harlem of the West."  The historical markers along Welton Street and its adjacencies are being updated, according to Tracy Winchester (who also directs the Five Points Business District).     The District is hosting a “Jazz, Wine and Walking Tour” on Friday, May 16, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on the eve of the Five Points Jazz Festival.
