Vinyl Vault

Mar 29, 2016

This month’s CD-of-the-month on KUVO is “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano – Symphonic Arrangement” by Steve Barta and Hubert Laws. It’s a reworking of the landmark “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano” by Claude Bolling and Jean Pierre Rampal which was recorded in 1975. That album was an enormous success and, as all enormously successful albums do, it resulted in several follow-up suites by Bolling. This week on the Vinyl Vault, we’ll hear a few tracks from one of those follow-ups, 1981’s “Toot Suite.” This one featured Bolling collaborating with classical trumpeter Maurice Andre.

This week's Vinyl Vault will feature an Italian-pressed LP from the I Gigante del Jazz series. The record itself dates from 1981, but the music was recorded in '69 and gathered from a few source materials, including alternate takes from "Sundance" and the "Is Sessions", both produced by the great Sonny Lester. Musicians include Chick Corea, Woody Shaw, Hubert Laws, Bennie Maupin and Woody Shaw, Dave Holland, and Horace Arnold.

The Vinyl Vault - Nick Drake

Oct 21, 2014

Written by English singer-songwriter Nick Drake around 1969, the song "Riverman" has since been covered by a dozen or so jazz artists - including Andy Bey, Claire Martin, Brad Mehldau and Lee Ritenour, and Kurt Elling, among others - despite Drake never being classified as a jazz artist, though he certainly drew heavily from the jazz influences of his time.

We’ll have some blues this week on the Vinyl Vault with Albert King. We’ll hear a few tracks from King’s 1992 release on the Tomato label, “King Albert.” It’s a high production number, but King’s gritty vocals and searing guitar work are all prominently featured. The Vinyl Vault: tonight at 8:30 on KUVO 89.3 FM, KVJZ 88.5 FM and kuvo.org.
