August CD of the Month: Jazz meets the Classics

Paquito D’Rivera was a child prodigy on sax and clarinet, by the time he was a teen, he had already traveled to New York and Santo Domingo to perform as a featured soloist with an orchestra.  In his native Cuba he had played with the  National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and became the youngest endorser of Selmer instruments. While visiting New York he promised himself that one day he would relocate to N.Y.

Coolest summer school ever: CCJA's Latin Jazz workshop

This summer on Wednesday nights at KUVO's Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio,  the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts has been instructing students ages 7 through 18 in  the fine points of Latin Jazz.  Instructor Eric Trujillo visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe what it takes to teach Latin Jazz to young musicians.

Mile High Afro-Cuban with the Kent Denver Azucartones

This month on the High School Collegiate series we air a pre-recorded program from the very near past: We're proud to present a broadcast with a Latin Jazz group from the Kent Denver School, the Azucartones , under the direction of Stephen Holley.  These young players recently absorbed the authentic sounds of Old Havana while studying in Cuba, and know their way around hot Caribbean rhythms.  Tune in and witness for yourself with your host Geoff Anderson this Tuesday, July 8th at 7:00 PM.
