Creative Districts: How to...

The creative sector accounts for over 185,000 jobs throughout the state of Colorado. Two years ago Colorado Creative Industries, the state’s arts agency, began certifying “Creative Districts” in various communities to leverage that artistic capital. There are now seven Certified Creative Districts in the state and with CCI poised to unveil its newest districts this June, KUVO arts reporter Carrie Saldo takes us through the process – and what it can mean for a community – starting with the state’s first certified Creative District… Salida!

Blacks in Comics: A changing image

Now showing at the Denver Public Library, “The Changing Image of Blacks in Comics.” Curator  William Foster III visited KUVO, where he and Steve Chavis indulged in comic geek, fan boy stories about both the history of comics, and what's happening on the comic scene today.

Professor Foster (Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury, Conn.) also shared his perspective on what drives comic book publishing, science fiction and comic book movies, and what's at stake when our superheroes reflect all its readers.

Miles Electric: different kind of blue

In the 1960s, Miles Davis was probably the hippest cat on the planet. He personified cool elegance. Stylish in his Brooks Brothers suits, cruising Manhattan in his yellow Ferrari, one beautiful black woman or another on his arm. His theme song embodied a confident indifference to the straight world that so many jazz artists and fans admired and tried to emulate---So What! From Bebop to Hard Bop, to Cool, to Modal, from ages 19 to 40, he was instrumental in inventing all these new musical vocabularies.

Breck's new cultural CEO: a bold future

Meet Breckenridge’s first Cultural CEO, Robb Woulfe – charged with overseeing and expanding arts and culture in the town. He’s not afraid to take some risks in his new pursuit.  “It needs to be bold, it needs to be big, it needs to be flashy,” said Woulfe of the programming he wants to launch in Breckenridge. “I am a big fan of spectacle and I think that takes its shape in a lot of different things.”  Since the 1960s when Breckenridge opened its mountain and saw both its year-round and seasonal populations surge, it has also seen a steady increase in arts related activities.
