Co-Host, First Take with Lando and Chavis and Public Affairs Manager

Steve Chavis is co-host for KUVO/KVJZ's morning program, First Take with Lando and Chavis, as well as being Public Affairs Manager for the award-winning Jazz format radio station in Denver. Steve began in public radio as an intern in Detroit. He served in the early days of KGNU in Boulder, too. Along the way he was news director for KBCO, KHOW and KHIH, and spent a dozen years directing communications for an international non-profit organization in Denver. 
In addition to rising early to get First Take started at 6:00 a.m., Steve is currently producing a documentary film in Detroit.
Steve and his bride Theonita have been married for 32 years. They are the parents of two sons, two daughters, a son-in-law and grand-humans to their German shepherd mix “Bella.”

Denver Woman's Press Club: jewelry weekend!

The Denver Woman's Press Club holds their annual jewelry sale this weekend at their Capitol Hill house at 1325 Logan, "a jewel among parking lots," says club member, poet and KUVO arts consultant Hilary DePolo.

"We have been able, with the growth of the jewelry sale,  to increase the amount of our scholarships and the number of our scholarships," said DePolo.  "We support young women who are studying journalism and creative writing."

Thanksgiving Food and Wine Pairings from Carolyn Joy

Just after the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau last night at Joy Wine and Spirits, Carolyn Joy visited First Take with Lando and Chavis with some Thanksgiving food and wine pairings.

The third Thursday in November is Beaujolais Nouveau Day.  "It's diminished in popularity a bit in the U.S.," said Joy, as she happily uncorked one of their offerings, from Georges DuBoeuf (pictured).  "It's  very young, very fresh, and a lot of people like to serve it at Thanksgiving."

Grateful Bread: baking artistry

The amazing, ancient art of making bread is preserved by a modern wave of artisanal bakers like Jeff Cleary, a master chef who left the restaurant and hotel business to serve those same establishments from his Golden, Colorado bakery, Grateful Bread.  Cleary visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis, with an armload of fresh bread.

First, to answer the question of why bakers begin their day so early: "Anyplace that does pastries is trying to get the morning crowd, and it's got to be fresh."

North Denver's fish farm: Colorado Aquaponics

That tasty tilapia plate before you might have come from a fishery tucked away right in north Denver's Elyria-Swansea neighborhood (once considered a "food desert").  Tawnya Sawyer is director of Education for Colorado Aquaponics at the Grow Haus, 4751 York Street, Denver CO 80216.  She visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe their operation.

"It's the combination of growing fish in a recirculating system, and putting water to work (growing plants)," explained Sawyer.  "We get the best of both."

Denver's Westwood: solutions to the 'food desert'

After seven years of organizing and getting their fingers in the dirt (literally), West Denver's Re:Vision won a $1.2 million performance-based loan from Denver's Office of Economic Development.  Executive Director of Re:Vision Eric Kornacki visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe how the grant will help them expand local, healthy food choices for the Westwood neighborhood of 6,000+ households, considered a "food desert."

"There are no grocery stores or corner stores or physical access points where somebody can buy affordable, healthy food," said Kornacki.
