Weekday mornings from 6 to 9am, Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis bring you Community, Culture and Music on First Take with Lando and Chavis. A blend of music, news and community-oriented programming, tuning in to First Take is the right way to start your day. Lando's "Stories of Standards" feature examines a jazz standard or a tune from the Great American Songbook each week. Stories of composers, lyricists, performers, and songs. On Wednesdays, Steve hosts Eats and Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic. Tune in!

"You only get five seconds to make that first impression."  Reason enough to check in with Colorado's "Ms. Manners," Linda Hill with the Colorado School of Protocol and Etiquette, based in Golden, Colo.

Our conversation ranged on tips for students about to graduate and enter the working world, and protocol for adults struggling with the changing rules for the workplace.  The use of social media in the workplace  and all the other human interactions are measures of our respect for each other, says Hill.

Colorado's Master Cigar Roller

Clay Carlton claims to be Colorado's only master cigar roller.  He learned the craft from a master roller in the Cuban tradition.  The "master" designation comes after working at it for a decade.

    

Carlton purveys his wares even while smoking in general is in decline.  "It's a tough way to go.  A lot of people do like cigars, but it's not like it used to be."  Still, he's finding new customers among women.  "I make thinner, smaller cigars for ladies, flavored with hazelnut, Grand Marnier, cognac."

CO health care signups: clock ticking

With just days remaining in the open enrollment period for the state health exchange, Connect for Health Colorado has pulled out all the stops, staffing up their call center, and offering a full series of public meetings to sign up subscribers face-to-face.

On "First Take with Lando and Chavis," we did two interviews with Connect for Health Colorado staff, first with Ben Davis regarding technical aspects of the campaign, and with Linda Kanamine on the details of signing up in the final week.

Good Night And Good Luck - Truth, Justice and Jazz

The film looks at Edward R. Murrow and his confrontation with Senator Joe McCarthy, who was famous for his public claims to know who in elected office and in the public eye were communists and commie-sympathizers.  Set in the late 1950s, this was a time of great concern over the rise of the Soviet Union and Communist China. It was also the start of television news and Murrow was (and probably still is) the gold standard for what role a news organization could play in the public dialogue of the issues of the day.
