Trials of Muhammad Ali: director Bill Siegel

The 2013 documentary "The Trials of Muhammad Ali" screened in Denver recently as part of the Community Cinema series, and it airs on "Independent Lens" on Rocky Mountain PBS (and other public TV stations) this Monday, April 14, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. (check local listing).  Director Bill Siegel talked about the film on "First Take with Lando and Chavis." 

  

The interview begins with a clip from the trailer.  The film covers Ali's conversion to the Nation of Islam, his opposition to the Vietnam War, and the price he paid for refusing his induction into the draft.

Don Grusin, friends: all-star jazz jam at Conf. on World Affairs

One of the annual offerings of the Conference on World Affairs is the jazz concert.  On Tuesday night, April 8, 2014, the players will crowd onto the stage at Macky Auditorium from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.  Don Grusin, Colorado native, CU graduate and professor, and jazz pianist visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with details of the concert and other CWA events.

Medora: Community Cinema from Rocky Mountain PBS

In Indiana, where life revolves around high school basketball, what happens to a community when their beloved team can no longer win a single game? Medora follows the down-but-not-out Medora Hornets varsity basketball team over the course of the 2011 season, capturing their stories both on and off the court. Riding a brutal losing streak when the film begins, the team’s struggle to compete bears eerie resemblance to the town’s fight for survival.

XicanIndie Filmfest 16: Lourdes Colon, Esai Morales in Denver

The XicanIndie Filmfest XVI - Latino World Cinema begins this evening at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center, 721 Santa Fe, Denver.  Festival director Daniel Salazar visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with clips and details of the  50 animations, documentaries, shorts and features showing at the 16th edition of the festival. "We're really experiencing a renaissance of filmmaking through Latin America, Mexico and the U.S.," said Salazar.

KUVO's celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in April is a great occasion to remind our audience of a virtual treasure trove of iconic jazz photographs taken from 1938 to 1948, and they're all in the public domain.  Larry Appelbaum in the Music Division at the Library of Congress joined "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to talk about photographer William Gottlieb and the collection."Almost all of Gottlieb's shots were done on location," said Appelbaum.
