Starz Denver Film Fest: Gene Kelly The Legacy

Among the special events at the 2013 Starz Denver Film Festival was Tuesday night's appearance of Patricia Ward Kelly, Gene Kelly's widow and keeper of the dancer/director/choreographer's flame.   He was a forerunner, said Mrs. Kelly, whom he hired as his biographer, then married in 1990. Dancing with animation (Jerry the Mouse in Anchors Aweigh - 1945), using double exposure in Cover Girl (1945), and the iconic Singin' in the Rain (1952), Kelly's mission was to create an "American" form of dance, a departure from the classically influenced style of "ballroom dance on polished floors. Gene wanted to take it to the street, literally."

Carrie Saldo, host of the Rocky Mountain PBS show Arts District interviewed Mrs. Kelly for a future television program.

Music on this feature includes the H2 Big Band, "Singing in the Rain," from the CD You're It, the tap dance number "La Cumparsita" from Anchors Aweigh, and the club scene with Cyd Charisse in Singin' in the Rain.
