Music Director and Host of Lunchtime at the Oasis

Arturo has been part of "The Oasis in the City" since the spring of 2003. Before that, he was part of Miami's jazz station for 13 years. Arturo was fortunate to have been raised listening to the progressive radio stations of Los Angeles, instilling in him a love and knowledge of many music styles while his parents hosted many Cuban music dance parties at home. Arturo is an award-winning Music Director: he's been awarded the Music Director of the Year honors for 3 consecutive years while at KUVO/KVJZ and once before in Miami. Arturo brings an enthusiastic and passionate approach to his music programs, coupled with pertinent information in the traditions of classic jazz radio. Arturo proudly states, "Jazz is my favorite 4-letter word and the world's greatest art form".

April CD of the Month: When Grappelli Meets Latin America

In the liner notes of the new recording of Federico Britos, NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera states, “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Federico Britos, a musician so versatile and charismatic that he’ll get called for a dance, an operetta, a cocktail party, or simply to have a drink in his endearing company and chat in some Miami café.” Some poignant words from one gifted musician to another.  When he was only 5 years old in his native Montevideo, Uruguay Britos began playing violin following in his father’s footsteps.

New Music Monday for April 19-Jazz Appreciation Month

Cuban drummer and 2011 McArthur Fellow awardee Dafnis Prieto releases a provocative straight-ahead project on his own Dafnison Music label, Dafnis Prieto Sextet's Triangles and Circles has many musical twists and turns, oh yeah, triangles and circles too!  University of Colorado at Ft. Collins music professor and saxophonist, Peter Sommer, is part of several leading groups along the Front Range, he also performs and records with his own group. Sommer's new one is titled Narrando Historias or narrating history.

New Music Monday: The Joys of Spring

Spring is the time of renewal and when it comes to music,  it is the time for a continuous stream of fine new releases in a wide variety of music styles. We'll begin with a new recording with Colorado connections despite it being led by UK drummer, Allan Finney who is fresh off a stint at Dazzle's with B-3 player Tony Monaco. Allan who has played the Vail Jazz Party in the past teams up with some Front Range cats for Cool featuring Eric Gunnison on piano/keys, Mark Simon playing bass, Bob Rebholz on flute/sax, and Bill Kopper on guitar.

New Music Monday: The Sounds of Spring for April 6th

The many splendid varieties of Spring continue to arrive to The Oasis, this week  we're pleased to debut the new one by the swingin'-soulful veteran pianist from Memphis, Harold Mabern. For his latest release out on the Smoke Sessions Records label, Mr. Mabern features a stellar line up of accompanists along with an all-star line up of guest vocalists. On Afro Blue Harold features Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Norah Jones, among others.
