Jazz Birthdays | Dr. Donald Byrd - Dec. 9

Dr. Donald Byrd, born on Dec. 9 in Detroit, gained renown as one of the leading jazz trumpeters in the 1950s and early '60s. Byrd moved to New York City in 1955 where his pure tone and perfect technique gained him a spot of influence at the heart of the hard bop movement.

 Byrd collaborated with most of the jazz greats of his time, including John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey.

Community development still cooking: Denver's NEWSED

There's nothing retro about the mission of community development, according to NEWSED Community Development Corporation.  Development Director Andrea Barela visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe their work, salute a few heroes, and mention this weekend's "Luminarias" celebration on Santa Fe Drive in Denver.

Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather" | Stories of Standards

A 1933 song written by Harold Alen with lyrics by Ted Koehler, “Stormy Weather” was first performed at Harlem's Cotton Club by Ethel Waters. This recording was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, and the Library of Congress honored the song by adding it to the National Recording Registry in 2004.

In 1933, this composition was also recorded by Frances Langford as Elisabeth Welch belted it out in London.

The Brad Leali Jazz Orchestra | Dec. 27 & 28

Denver native Brad Leali's alto sax solos have been called "sparkling and Cannonball Adderley influenced" by the London Evening Standard.

During his years as one of the top jazz musicians in New York City, Leali was a staple in legendary jazz venues like the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Jazz Standard, Iridium, and Birdland. He has also performed in Lincoln Center in the orchestras of jazz legends Nancy Wilson and Benny Golson.
