First Take with Lando and Chavis

Weekday mornings from 6 to 9am, Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis bring you Community, Culture and Music on First Take with Lando and Chavis. A blend of music, news and community-oriented programming, tuning in to First Take is the right way to start your day. Lando's "Stories of Standards" feature examines a jazz standard or a tune from the Great American Songbook each week. Stories of composers, lyricists, performers, and songs. On Wednesdays, Steve hosts Eats and Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic. Tune in!

Comic Book Classroom: igniting souls at Denver Comic Con

This weekend's Denver ComicCon is just a sneaky way to get students to read more, and it's working.  It turns out the explosive (BOOM) success of Denver's comic book convention always had education in mind, according Illya Kowalchuk, director of education for Comic Book Classroom, the year-round part of the project to bring creativity and literacy to local students.

Job Corps: year-round career training for youth

Job Corps is more than the summer job for teenagers.  "It's about careers," D'Ambrose Finch told "First Take with Lando and Chavis" hosts Steve Chavis and George Peck.  Finch visited KUVO to recruit more applicants.

Finch, an admissions counselor, told KUVO, "We have all kinds of trades, from construction - electrical, carpentry, welding - all the way to health care."    The no-cost residential, educational and vocational training program for 16 to 24 year olds holds orientations every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Calle 54: A Celebration of Latin Jazz

Calle means street in Spanish, and Calle 54 is a street any jazz fan would love to live on. This film is such a celebration of the absolute best in Latin jazz that you will want to turn it up loud, invite the neighbors over, break out the liquid refreshments,and make a party out of it. The musicians certainly did.

Who's welcome at the NCIPA Pow-wow? You are

The notion that Pow-wows are only for Native Americans would be like saying rodeos are just for cowboys.  For more than two decades the Northern Colorado Intertribal Pow-wow Association has struggled to overcome a number of misconceptions about this celebratory and reverent event. Joie Dennis’ Fort Collins living room is lined with Native American artwork and artifacts.

Free meals and summer fun for CO kids

13 year old Jalia H. won the 2014 poster contest through Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver

School's out for summer, and now it falls to parents to manage the daily detail of feeding the kids.  Since 2009, nutrition advocacy group Hunger Free Colorado has coordinated a statewide network of sites to distribute nutritious meals for children up through age 18.  Michelle Ray, director of Communications for Hunger Free Colorado, visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to talk about their statewide summer feeding program.
