Among the top outdoor jazz hangouts of the summer is "Jazz on 2nd Avenue," in the tiny, tucked-away town of Niwot, Colorado, halfway between Boulder and Longmont along Highway 119. Local restaurateur and jazz enthusiast Howard Treppeda visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to introduce us to Niwot and the top jazz talent he's attracted.
"It brings the community together," said Treppeda, who's produced the event for four years. "You have food and wine, and when you bring music into play, that really equals community."
The 1st Note Music Foundation provides music instruments to at-risk youth. One of Colorado's newest ensembles Ritmo Jazz Latino is performing this Friday night, Aug. 15 in a benefit for the Foundation at Crossroads Theater, part of the Jazz on the Point series. 1st Note foundation board member and Ritmo Jazz Latino band leader Dr. Walter Barr visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to promote the foundation's work.
"Young Man with a Horn," starring Kirk Douglas, Doris Day and Lauren Bacall, was adapted for the screen from what might be the first jazz novel of the same name by Dorothy Baker in 1938. Her novel was a highly fictionalized account of the life of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. The film's director Michael Curtiz is best known for the classic Humphrey Bogart/Ingrid Gardner "Casablanca." He made eight films with Bogart and another 12 with Errol Flynn. "Young Man With A Horn" came late in his career.
