Jazz Appreciation Month at KUVO

April's a big month for jazz - it's our annual month long celebration of the music we love most - Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM)! And, it ends with a bang - on the 30th, with International Jazz Day!

During April on KUVO - special programming, trivia, education, "feelings of jazz" from so many important members of the jazz community, live performances and more!

International Jazz Day from Osaka and Denver

In the shadow of Osaka Castle, many of the world's greatest jazz musicians performed for the 3rd annual International Jazz Day concert.  (Osaka was known as Japan's "jazz mecca" in the mid-1920s.)  Sponsored by UNESCO and chaired by UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, the event opened with the haunting and raw sound of Steve Turre's trademark conch shells and Japanese drumming led by master Taiko drummer Shuichi Hidano.

Tuesday's Jazz Trivia:
Art Blakey led the Jazz Messengers from 1953 until his death in 1990. Often referred to as "The University of Art Blakey", his ensemble regularly featured up and coming trumpet players who went on to greater fame and fortune.
