Denver's Westwood: solutions to the 'food desert'

After seven years of organizing and getting their fingers in the dirt (literally), West Denver's Re:Vision won a $1.2 million performance-based loan from Denver's Office of Economic Development.  Executive Director of Re:Vision Eric Kornacki visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe how the grant will help them expand local, healthy food choices for the Westwood neighborhood of 6,000+ households, considered a "food desert."

"There are no grocery stores or corner stores or physical access points where somebody can buy affordable, healthy food," said Kornacki.

DIA showcases local craft beers, artistry

We're not sure if this label made the exhibit, but Left Hand Brewing is know for elaborate labels like this one for Oktoberfest Marzen Lager.

While you're in line to clear TSA security and cross the bridge to Denver International Airport's Concourse A, don't rush past the display cases.  The next exhibit there (September 20 through December 2014, and just in time for the Great American Beer Festival) is called "Colorado On Tap: The State of the Brew.  DIA's Art and Culture Program Manager Chris Stevens visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with the details.

Eats & Beats: Eater.com's latest Heatmap

She's on the local food scene like white on rice, but way more diverse.  The local desk of Eater.com is managed by Andra Zeppelin, who joined "First Take with Lando and Chavis."  (Arturo Gomez sitting in!)

Eats & Beats: Welton St. Cafe - soul food!

Five stars on Google!  Four out of five stars on Yelp.com.  Five stars out of five on UrbanSpoon.com.  The Dickerson family has run the Welton Street Cafe (2736 Welton St., Denver, 80205) for most of Fathima Dickerson's 27 years.  She visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to tell a few stories from their acclaimed family soul food restaurant.

Eats & Beats: New farmer's market for Jefferson Park

There's room on the Farmer's Market haywagon, and you're invited to hop on!  The latest neighborhood to start its own farmer's market is West Denver's Jefferson Park, which lies between I-25 and Federal Boulevard, both north and south of 23rd Avenue.  Kendra Sandoval and Bevery Grant from Mo Betta Green Marketplace visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with a shout out to farmers and craftspersons to bring their wares to Jefferson Park when they launch on Saturday, August 23, 2014.
