Johnny Mandel: pre-eminent jazz composer for film

Johnny Mandel is one of the rarest of musicians who could write and arrange for almost any setting or purpose; 35 film scores, TV (movies and show themes), Broadway, big band, combo, vocalist. His credits include Woody Herman, Count Basie, Sinatra, Mae West, Michael Jackson, Shirley Horn and Diane Krall.   (We like the online biography at www.ascap.com, on the occasion of Mandel winning the 1997 ASCAP Mancini Award.)

Dexter Gordon Tribute on Thursday

Dexter Gordon, tenor saxophonist and bebop pioneer, born this date in 1923

Dexter Gordon was born on this date in 1923: 91 years ago. A bebop pioneer, the tenor sax player was a New York musician in the 40's until he was sidelined by addiction and incarceration. He had several reincarnations and was always recognized as a huge talent when he was available to perform. In 1986, Gordon acted in the Bertrand Tavernier-directed "Round Midnight". Much more on Dexter Gordon is available here. Tune into First Take with Lando and Chavis on Thursday morning for some of Gordon's best!
