The 31st Annual Chicago Blues Fest, this year sub-titled “Blues by the Lake”, was the weekend of June 13-15 in Grant Park. The panoramic  views from this Lakefront park are extraordinary—Lake Michigan, Buckingham Fountain, and the magnificent Chicago Skyline to the north and west.

In the mid-summer heat, who want's to be in the kitchen?  Takin' it to the grill, 5280 Magazine’s Kasey Cordell guides us through “The Ultimate Backyard BBQ.” 

Keeping things cool on the plate is the Early Summer Picnic Salad from Z Cuisine's chef is Timothy Payne.  "This salad is almost too beautiful to eat in some ways, with a ton of ingredients," said Cordell.

In the interview, we also discussed how to manage the heat of your cooking surface, with the "Grill-O-Meter."

RIP @ 84: Paul Horn-extraordinary flautist.

Paul Horn, a Grammy-winning alto saxophonist and flutist whose career reached from mainstream contemporary jazz to pioneering efforts in music that came to be known as New Age, has died. He was 84. Horn died June 29 at his home in Vancouver, Canada, after a brief illness, according to his son Marlen. Over the course of his long career, Horn performed or recorded with Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, Nat "King" Cole and Miles Davis. Mr. Horn was especially noteworthy for his cultural internationalism and his fascination with the meditative and spiritual aspects of music.

Coolest summer school ever: CCJA's Latin Jazz workshop


This summer on Wednesday nights at KUVO's Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio,  the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts has been instructing students ages 7 through 18 in  the fine points of Latin Jazz.  Instructor Eric Trujillo visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to describe what it takes to teach Latin Jazz to young musicians.
