Music Director and Host of Lunchtime at the Oasis

Arturo has been part of "The Oasis in the City" since the spring of 2003. Before that, he was part of Miami's jazz station for 13 years. Arturo was fortunate to have been raised listening to the progressive radio stations of Los Angeles, instilling in him a love and knowledge of many music styles while his parents hosted many Cuban music dance parties at home. Arturo is an award-winning Music Director: he's been awarded the Music Director of the Year honors for 3 consecutive years while at KUVO/KVJZ and once before in Miami. Arturo brings an enthusiastic and passionate approach to his music programs, coupled with pertinent information in the traditions of classic jazz radio. Arturo proudly states, "Jazz is my favorite 4-letter word and the world's greatest art form".

New Music Monday: New Orleans Seasoning Continues

After our New Orleans All-Star Rhythm Revue at our signature fund raiser at Balestreri Vineyards on Saturday night, we remain in the New Orleans and Caribbean groove, after all The Crescent City is the northernmost port of entry of the Caribbean. Our highlight of the week is the brand spanking new CD by Dr. John, a tribute to his hometown and the most important figure of jazz, Louis, Armstrong.  Dr. John is accompanied by fellow New Orleans talents such as Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton as well as Arturo Sandoval and Bonnie Raitt.

New Music Monday: We're Having a Heatwave

We commence another month of weekly debuts with an array of hot sounds of the summertime led by the Toronto based saxophonist and flautist Jane Bunnett and her new all female aggregation, Maqueque (mah-keh-keh), an Afro-Cuban  word defined as the spirit of a young girl. Idris Muhammad-A Funky Drummer-RIP@74

New Orleans native,  legendary drummer/bandleader Idris Muhammad passes away at 74 years of age.

Idris Muhammad, whose drumming crossed over several musical styles including funk, jazz, and rhythm and blues, died Tuesday , July 29. He was 74. Click here to read full obituary.

jazz89KUVO and KVJZ will be honoring the memory of the late Mr. Muhammad by playing music featuring his drumming throughout the day for the next week or so.

New Music Monday: The July Finale

We close out July's New Music Monday on Lunchtime at the Oasis with Arturo Gómez starting at Noon until 1pm, Rocky Mountain time. This week's highlight is by veteran bassist from Detroit, Rodney Whitaker, his newest CD is titled When We Find  Ourselves Alone for the Mack Avenue label also out of the Motor City.  On five of the album's eleven tracks, Rockelle Fortin, Rodney's oldest daughter is the vocalist, About his latest offering Rodney says the following: "It's an old-school feel with a 21st century attitude"
