Tito Puente Tribute on KUVO | April 19, 4-6 PM MT

Born on April 20, 1923 in New York City, Tito Puente - also known as “El Rey” and "The King"-  was a pioneering force in music. Renown for fusing styles, Puente added an irresistible big-band spin to traditional Afro-Caribbean music.

In 1948, Puente formed the Tito Puente Orchestra. He is quoted in The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Music saying, "We play jazz with the Latin touch, that's all, you know."

By the end of his lengthy career, Puente was considered a legend in both Latin music and jazz.

Pianist Herbie Hancock recorded his composition “Cantaloupe Island” for his 1964 album, Empyrean Isles, with Freddie Hubbard on cornet, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums.

A member of the Miles Davis Quintet at the time, Hancock's composition incorporates elements of modal jazz, inspired by the music Davis's band was performing at the time.

KUVO Live Broadcast at Tony P's | April 18

KUVO is broadcasting live from Tony P's Bar & Pizzeria on 17th Avenue April 18 from 10 pm to midnight.

Vocalist and percussionist Linda Theus-Lee will be performing live with her five-piece band.

Theus-Lee's musical creativity lives in vocal jazz, blues, musical theater and R&B. In addition, she is a talented percussionist and composes songs on guitar.

Kempe Foundation marks 30 years against child abuse

More than 10,000 children were abused or neglected in Colorado in 2013, according to the Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.  John Faught, president of the Foundation visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to update the KUVO audience during National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
