Thornton Community Band premieres "Some Give All"

The Thornton Community Band premieres an original work, "Some Give All," composed by David Holsinger and commissioned in memory of Lance Cpl. Thomas J. Slocum, who was killed in action in the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. 

Principal conductor Jon Borodach sat down with KUVO's Steve Chavis to talk about band music and this new work, which will be performed for the first time this Saturday night, Nov. 9, 2013, at the Skyview Campus, 8990 York St. in Thornton, CO.

Jason Mott's The Returned

Imagine what happens when people who died 50 years ago begin returning to life, showing up all over the world, appearing to be the same age they where when they departed. Jason Mott's first novel, The Returned, is 19th on the New York Times bestseller list this week. 

The tale (in the magical realism genre) was inspired by a dream Mott had of his late mother. Published by Harlequin's Mira imprint, the book has already been picked up by Brad Pitt's production company Plan B for a television series.

So What: The Song, The Show, The Club

"So What" is the Miles Davis classic composition featured this week on KUVO's music education segment "Stories of Standards." Byron Stripling on Miles Davis' "So What"

This week, KUVO's music education feature "Stories of Standards" covers arguably the most important song in jazz history, Miles Davis' "So What," track one on the 1959 LP Kind of Blue. For some added perspective, we caught up with trumpeter Byron Stripling at the 2013 Vail Jazz Festival, where he presented a multi-media tribute to Miles Davis. Stripling considers Miles Davis his hero, for musical and other reasons, and also discusses the legacy of the song "So What."

Soul Food Scholar reviews 'The Butler:' aspirations

Lee Daniels' fourth directing effort depicts the true story of Eugene Allen, a butler in the White House through eight presidents.  The film stars Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey portrays his wife in this passage of time story. It's a breathless race through America's civil rights history, with some Forrest Gump-like historical meet-ups.
