Morning Beat

Weekdays, 9 AM to Noon

Victor treats you to straight-ahead jazz, vocals and instrumentals.

The Morning Beat features a "romantic spotlight" tune twice every morning, and also hosts a variety of book and cultural reviews.

Greg Osby: P. Mauriat

Drummer Louis Hayes and saxophonist Greg Osby are members of two different jazz generations. And this week, you can compare those generations when both players hit the area, working with a number of strong, area-based musicians. The Detroit-born drummer, who turned 79 this year, landed in New York as a teenager and quickly became a member of one of pianist Horace Silver’s classic quintets (with a frontline of trumpeter Blue Mitchell and saxophonist Junior Cook).

Cécile McLorin Salvant: ABC Jazz

If you are trying to recover from Thanksgiving, there are two, big league vocal events to help you along. The first of those events takes place on Saturday and Sunday when singer Petra Haden hits Dazzle with a program called “Sings Jesse Harris.” Petra, one of bassist Charlie Haden’s triplet daughters, has covered a number of musical bases with her voice and violin since the release of her initial solo album twenty-years ago.

Orpheum Theater

Let’s start off with the vocal side of the music. On Thursday, singer Kathy Kosins hits the stage at Baur’s Listening Lounge, 1512 Curtis, at 8 p.m. where, just a few weeks ago, pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa turned up the heat on that stage with his potent trio. Kosins, of course, isn’t from Cuba, but she has over her career covered a number of musical bases, from rock and R&B to jazz where she has certainly found a home.

Veterans Advantage

You might think of the coming seven days as a musical lead-in to the 46th annual UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival that runs April 21-23. In addition to the numerous school groups participating in the festivities, the University of Northern Colorado/Greeley affair has headliners: the New York Voices on April 21; the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Ellis Marsalis Trio on April 22; and Hammond B-3 man Joey DeFranceso and saxophonist Houston Person along with the UNC Jazz Lab Band on April 23.

Otá Music

The second week of Jazz Appreciation Month right here in the Rockies gets going on Thursday with pianist Omar Sosa returning to Mount Vernon Country Club.
