First Take with Lando and Chavis

WEEKDAYS, 6-9 am

Start your day off right with Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis, bringing you a blend of music, news and community programming every weekday morning from 6 to 9 am. 

Each week, Lando's Stories of Standards feature examines a different jazz standard or tune from the Great American Songbook to educate listeners on the song's history, composers and covers.

On Wednesdays, Chavis hosts Eats & Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic. 

Tune in Thursdays for Arts & Culture features. Every month on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, we explore the world of Jazz on Film with special guest Matthew Goldwasser. On the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, KUVO arts maven and Rocky Mountain PBS Arts District host Carrie Saldo presents the latest in Colorado's visual and performing arts.

Oil and Gas Task Force sends 9 recommendations to Gov. Hickenlooper

After five months of meeting,  Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has finished its work. Inside Energy’s Dan Boyce joined “First Take With Lando and Chavis” to discuss the highlights of their work. 

“Those on the environmental side of the task force,” Boyce says, “are actually going so far as to call it a failure because it didn’t address the core issue the task force had, which was to give local communities more legal say.”

Jump for Jazz: Boulder event to educate, demonstrate

Dexter Payne (far left) will be leading a seminar at the "Jump for Jazz" event in Boulder this June.

Boulder jazz fans have organized a jazz education event for June 2015 called the “Jump for Jazz Festival.”  Boulder’s "Jazz Gossip" Miriam Paisner sat down with “First Take with Lando and Chavis” to describe the community outreach.

“I have wanted to know for sure (about the making of jazz music) since about ten years ago when I went to the Boulder Jazz Jams at the Broker Inn and Brad Goode was leading," said Paisner, who sends out weekly jazz listings to hundreds of people via an e-mail list.

Damas de Blanco: Ladies in White unlikely protestors

Proceeds from NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera's concert at Mount Vernon Country Club this week will benefit Damas de Blanco, the "Ladies in White" who have worn white to Sunday Mass in Havana and around Cuba since an incident of mass arrests in 2003.  To explain this quiet protest movement, Dr. Orlando Gutierrez Boronat from the Cuban Democratic Directorate based in Miami joined "First Take with Lando and Chavis."

Eats & Beats: 3rd annual Local Food Summit

The 3rd annual Local Food Summit is March 2-3 in Denver.  Mickki Langston, executive director of the Mile High Business Alliance, visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis to describe the growing momentum behind the local food movement.

"The intention is to help build relationships between people who are working inside the food economy all the time," said Langston.  "Food is the foundation of our community, and it's delicious!"

Ellington and Strayhorn's "Satin Doll" | Stories of Standards

Written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, "Satin Doll" became a fast hit when it debuted in 1953. Johnny Mercer later added the lyrics to the hit instrumental version of this song.

At most of his performances, Ellington played "Satin Doll" as his closing number.

The chord progression of "Satin Doll" is well-known for its uniqueness as is its opening with a ii-V-I turnaround.
