Five Points Jazz Festival

The Five Points Jazz Festival, now in its 11th year, brings people together for a day of food, fun and fantastic music. The free festival takes place the third Saturday of May each year and celebrates the history of Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. Once known as the Harlem of the West, Five Points was home to several jazz clubs which played host to many of jazz music’s legends such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and many more. Since its inception in 2004, the Five Points Jazz Festival has grown each year in size and popularity. In 2013 more than 16,000 people attended the festival to hear more than 20 local bands on six stages.  On May 17, 2014, 23 bands are scheduled on seven stages. You won’t want to miss the Main Stage headliners, the Nelson Rangell quartet and the Brad Leali Orchestra.

Arturo Gómez, KUVO Music Director interjects, “It’s gonna be cooool, cra-azy, and HOT!” As a nine year veteran on the planning committee, he has seen the festival ignite the community’s music culture. When asked why he joined the committee he explained, “When I moved to Denver, I knew I had to be a part of the revival, be a part of bringing the Five Points neighborhood back to its glory days.” One of the most exciting developments this year is the festival’s headliner, The Brad Leali Orchestra.  For the first time the headliner will be an internationally acclaimed jazz musician. Gomez shares, “Best part is he’s a home boy. He’s from Denver and is staying with his parents. There will be a huge out pouring of support for him. It’s BIG for the festival.”

Come see us at the KUVO/RMPBS booth just south of the Main Stage on the west side of Welton. For the first time, we will be broadcasting live from the street and with a food/beer garden.  Frijoles Colorado is serving Cuban food including roasting an entire pig. The Falling Rock Tap House Beer Trailer will be pouring six brews on tap. A special thank you to KUVO’s festival sponsors Denver Water, Frijoles Colorado, and Falling Rock Tap House. The Five Points Festival is made possible by Arts and Venues Denver.
