Steve Chavis

Co-Host, First Take with Lando and Chavis and Public Affairs Manager

Steve Chavis is co-host for KUVO/KVJZ's morning program, First Take with Lando and Chavis, as well as being Public Affairs Manager for the award-winning Jazz format radio station in Denver. Steve began in public radio as an intern in Detroit. He served in the early days of KGNU in Boulder, too. Along the way he was news director for KBCO, KHOW and KHIH, and spent a dozen years directing communications for an international non-profit organization in Denver. 
In addition to rising early to get First Take started at 6:00 a.m., Steve is currently producing a documentary film in Detroit.
Steve and his bride Theonita have been married for 32 years. They are the parents of two sons, two daughters, a son-in-law and grand-humans to their German shepherd mix “Bella.”

Matchwits 2015 champions: Fossil Ridge HS, Ft. Collins

Since January, hosts of "First Take with Lando and Chavis" Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis played clips from the Rocky Mountain PBS high school quiz show "Matchwits,"  but they were no match for Colorado's best and brightest.  Coach of the 2015 championship team from Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins Martha Cranor visited the KUVO morning show to talk about how the team pulled off the win.

Colorado jazz festival season kicks off in Greeley

Colorado's jazz festival season kicks off this weekend in Greeley.   Dana Landry, area head for Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado visited First Take to preview the 45th annual UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival.

"We are lucky to get what I view as some of the best artists in the world right here in Greeley, Colorado," said Landry.  Headliners include vocalist Deborah Brown, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (from the Village Vanguard in NYC), saxophonists Chris Potter and Bobby Watson and others.

Cancer: Emperor of Maladies - local hope (part 1)

The community gathered recently at Rocky Mountain PBS studios for an advance screening of the new Ken Burns-produced documentary series Cancer - Emperor of All Maladies.

Rocky Mountain PBS hosted a preview screening of Ken Burns-produced film,  “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,” a three part documentary based on the book by Siddhartha Mukherjee, airing March 30-April 1, 2015. At the event, Steve Chavis from the KUVO morning show "First Take with Lando and Chavis" captured a few local stories of hope.

Cesar Chavez Day march and events in Denver

This Saturday, March 28, 2015 marks the 14th annual Cesar Chavez Day March.  A founder of the sponsoring Cesar E. Chavez Peace and Justice Committee of Denver, Dr. Ramon Del Castillo visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" to preview the events and share his despedida (farewell poem).

Eats & Beats: City Food, City Land

Adam Brock, co-founder of the celebrated Growhaus in North Denver visited “First Take With Lando and Chavis” to discuss a new initiative called "City Food, City Land," an attempt to increase food production on underutilized public land. 

The policy is being drafted by the Denver’s Sustainable Food Policy Council to align with Mayor Michael Hancock's 2020 Sustainability Goals.  “The most ambitious thing is that we want to get 20% of the food that Denver eats to be grown or processed in Colorado by 2020," said Brock.
