Steve Chavis

First Take with Lando and Chavis Co-Host & Public Affairs Manager

Steve began his career in public radio as an intern in Detroit and at KGNU in Boulder. Before coming to KUVO, Steve was news director for KBCO, KHOW and KHIH and spent a dozen years directing communications for an international non-profit organization based in Denver.

In addition to rising early to get First Take with Lando and Chavis started at 6 am, Steve is currently producing a documentary film in Detroit.

Steve and his bride, Theonita, have been married 32 years. They are the parents of two sons, two daughters, a son-in-law, and grand-humans to their German shepherd mix “Bella.”

Today on "First Take With Lando and Chavis," Bob Bows called in to discuss The Denver Center Theatre Company's presentation of "The Glass Menagerie."

Bows talks about the origins and the meanings of the play, but he also hits on the role the actors play in this monolog heavy vehicle. Regarding lead actor Aubrey Deeker who plays Tom, "This particular monolog that he delivers was just incandescent ... he just lit up the stage and its something to behold."

In addition to jazz clubs and music schools, acclaimed young pianist Emmet Cohen included KUVO in his Colorado tour.  Here's a segment of his performance interview on "Lunchtime at the Oasis" with host Arturo Gomez.

While in Colorado Cohen held classes at Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado. "The Way I've learned to teach is to show my love for it and show the joy it can bring me; and the uplifting it can bring to people of all kinds, old people, young people, children or people of different countries."

Public safety, the Five Points Business Improvement District and the "Food, Jazz and Wine" event were all on the table this morning when Tracy Winchester, executive director of the Five Points Business District, visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis" with her monthly segment "Fridays on Five Points."

Among the delicacies featured at this year's Live at the Vineyards event on August 13 is a sweet-and-spicy offering from the new "unconventional" Chinese restaurant in the Lowry restaurant district, Lucky Cat.  "General Guard Chicken" featured natural orange flavors and a couple of pepper treatments: arbol and the southeast Asian chili relish sambal.  The recipe from Lucky Cat executive chef Troy Guard is posted below.

It took literally months for this interview to make on the air during the jazz morning show on KUVO, "First Take with Lando and Chavis."  I carried the book for weeks and weeks, wanting the perfect inspiration that would match the exploding creative potential within the pages of "The Steal Like An Artist Journal," the companion to the best-selling book by Austin Kleon ("a writer who draws").
