Weekday mornings from 6 to 9am, Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis bring you Community, Culture and Music on First Take with Lando and Chavis. A blend of music, news and community-oriented programming, tuning in to First Take is the right way to start your day. Lando's "Stories of Standards" feature examines a jazz standard or a tune from the Great American Songbook each week. Stories of composers, lyricists, performers, and songs. On Wednesdays, Steve hosts Eats and Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic. Tune in!

Jazz on Film: Bill Cosby, Jazz Fanatic

In the early 1960s, a young comic stepped up to the microphone in a Greenwich Village nightclub and instead of offering a predictable run of non-stop jokes a la Rodney Dangerfield he told stories and riffed on personal and social experiences. In another club across town jazz artists did away with traditional head-melody / chorus / head-style of playing and began improvising freely (think Coltrane's "My Favorite Things"). They also performed completely original and free-flowing compositions.

The July presentation of the Denver Film Society's Women + Film series features a screening of "Lucky Them" starring Toni Collette and Thomas Haden Church.  Writer and producer Emily Wachtel (pronounced wahk-TELL) is in Denver for the screening on Friday, July 11 (4:40 p.m. and 7:20 p.m.) at the Sie FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Ave., Denver, 80206.  Wachtel visited "First Take with Lando and Chavis."

Theater Review: Boulder Dinner Theater's Shrek

At Boulder's Dinner Theatre we find that while ogres seem different than the rest of us—they're large, green, and uncouth—underneath it all, they're sensitive to the same things that we are, evidenced by Shrek (Seth Caikowski), who has been belittled and rejected once too often. As a result, he's ready to build a wall around his swamp and let the world go its separate way.

Eats & Beats: Balistreri Vineyards, fresh for '14!

North Denver's winery Balistreri Vineyards hosts the 9th Annual KUVO signature event, the New Orleans Rhythm Revue on Saturday, August 9.  Julie Balistreri thinks it's a great opportunity to introduce people to their vintage labels, made from Colorado grapes! "You'll be able to taste over 15 different wines at the KUVO event," said Julie.   Again in 2014, there will be some special "jazz label" wines, named for the featured performers Donald Harrison Jr., Henry Butler, Leo Nocentelli, and Sarah Vaughan.   "A Sangiovese, a Merlot, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Syrah.

In the mid-summer heat, who want's to be in the kitchen?  Takin' it to the grill, 5280 Magazine’s Kasey Cordell guides us through “The Ultimate Backyard BBQ.” 

Keeping things cool on the plate is the Early Summer Picnic Salad from Z Cuisine's chef is Timothy Payne.  "This salad is almost too beautiful to eat in some ways, with a ton of ingredients," said Cordell.

In the interview, we also discussed how to manage the heat of your cooking surface, with the "Grill-O-Meter."
