April CD of the Month: When Grappelli Meets Latin America

In the liner notes of the new recording of Federico Britos, NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera states, “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like Federico Britos, a musician so versatile and charismatic that he’ll get called for a dance, an operetta, a cocktail party, or simply to have a drink in his endearing company and chat in some Miami café.” Some poignant words from one gifted musician to another.  When he was only 5 years old in his native Montevideo, Uruguay Britos began playing violin following in his father’s footsteps.

Composed in 1947, Thelonius Monk's "In Walked Bud" is a tribute to jazz pianist Bud Powell. The tune's chord progression borrows from Irving Berlin's 1927 standard "Blue Skies."

"In Walked Bud" spans Monk's career, starting with the 1947 recording sessions for Genius of Modern Music. In 1968, Jon Hendricks added some spontaneously conceived lyrics to a version that made its way into Underground - one of Monk’s final studio albums accompanied by a band.

The week in music begins with a visit by saxophonist Dick Oatts to Dazzle, 930 Lincoln, on Thursday at 7 and 9 p.m. (303-839-5100). Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1953, Oatts headed for New York in 1977 and quickly became a part of the famed Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. He was with the big band when it continued as the Mel Lewis Orchestra and then as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
